Homilies on Ecclesiastes (Date Unknown):
8
“Paul, joining righteousness to faith and weaving them together, constructs of
them the breastplates for the infantryman, armoring the soldier properly and safely
on both sides.  A soldier cannot be considered safely armored when either shield is
disjoined from the other. For faith without works of justice is not sufficient for
salvation; neither, however, is righteous living secure in itself of salvation, if it is
disjoined from faith.”
The Lord’s Prayer (Date Unknown):
Sermon 5
“‘Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.’  My friends, what do these
words mean?  It seems that the Lord gives many different names to the evil one,
each suited to the difference among evil actions.  So, he is devil, Beelzebub,
Mammon, prince of this world, murderer of humankind, the evil one, the father of
lies, and other similar names.  Perhaps, in this instance, one of the names
attributed to him is ‘temptation.’”
